A lot can be said about Fred Minnick, but I must thank him for introducing me to Old Line Spirits through this 2024 Top 100 list. After featuring the young Baltimore-based ASM distillery, I quickly got in touch and heard back quickly with: “I know exactly where Kitsap County is, I used to serve in the Navy stationed on Whidbey Island.” That was Mark, Co-founder of Old Line and former Navy Pilot. We started talking from there and coordinated my visit after I got done at Sagamore. I had the idea of partnering with Old Line fan Lu, founder of Annapolis Whiskey Club, and he jumped at the opportunity.

We met there in the afternoon on a cold January day and the tasting started. We tasted great things that day but the selection took a few months of Lu re-visiting and Mark shipping me sample packs. I could taste their core flavors in every sample, but I could tell there was the right cask, we just hadn’t found it yet. Then a sample pack arrived with an eight year American oak barrel that was just what I was looking for. The sample was rich and layered with all their unique and delicious notes of cardamon brittle, tropical fruit, sweet coffee powder, and a beautiful spice driven and oak finish. The whiskey has been bottled for months while arranging distribution and I am happy to report the whiskey has become even more integrated resting in the bottle.

Lu became a fan of a Sauternes finished barrel that is not as old and shows brighter fruit notes with more elegant and softer spice rounded by the French wine barrel. The barley is a more prominent flavor in a good way. This will be a great pour in the warmer months while the eight year will keep you warm in the doldrums of winter. We are choosing to sell both in a bundle because each barrel showcases what age, and finishing can contribute to the flavor of the finished product in the bottle. Most of you have never had the opportunity to try Old Line Spirits before and I am happy to help introduce the hard work of these Navy Veterans who are making exceptional whiskey.

Cheers,

Kolby
